The School

For more than 30 years, Berkeley Ballet Theater’s Pre-Ballet, Children’s, and Youth programs provide systematic classical ballet training in a diverse and nurturing environment. In order to receive consistent, progressive instruction, students enroll for at least a semester at a time. Many classes offer live musical accompaniment, and students in the Children’s and Youth Divisions have the opportunity to perform in two annual seasons in fully produced theatrical settings. Multiple payment options are available.

Classes Offered at The School

Pre-Ballet Program

Children ages 4 to 6.5 are introduced to movement and music through gentle and nurturing instruction. Students learn to integrate discipline with creative expression, while having fun. Classes are once a week in the Pre-Ballet Division and the levels group students by age.

Children's Division

Students from age seven onward are eligible to participate in Levels 1 through 6, progressing through beginning and intermediate curriculum, including beginning pointe work. Safe development is emphasized in the context of understanding physical anatomy. Attending class at least twice each week allows students to benefit from regular practice and integrate their learning.

Youth Division

Berkeley Ballet Theater’s most advanced dancers who study Modern on a weekly basis in addition to multiple ballet and pointe classes. Pas de deux and variations classes are added in higher levels.

Summer Workshops

Each year, BBT offers Summer Workshops for all levels. Half and full day workshops combine classical ballet training with a diverse genre including modern, jazz, capoeira, variations, and pilates. Summer Workshops are open to new and returning students.
