Close to My Heart
As part of the 40th Anniversary Heritage Photos series, Ruby shared photos and memories of her time at BBT participating in The Nutcracker.
Like many at BBT, my first role in the Nutcracker was a little angel. On the night of my first performance, my big angel, who I looked up to greatly, gave me a small stuffed animal and candy cane as a gift. After that, I promised myself that if I were to one day be a big angel, I would keep this cycle going. So, many years and Levels later, when I became a big angel myself, I made sure to give my little angels little stuffed animals after their performances. I will always remember this.
I will also always remember the honor and excitement of having the opportunity to be Clara in the Nutcracker, which was my dream role ever since I was a young girl. I honestly don’t think I ever had to fake smile on stage during this role because I was genuinely so happy to be on stage and to share this performance with the other dancers and the audience.
Moments of connection on stage were always my favorite parts of performances. I loved the moment when Kailee as the Sugar Plum Fairy and I as Clara kissed checks before the party scene in the Nutcracker. I loved when Eugene, my snow pas de deux partner, and I ran around opposite sides of the stage and then met in the middle holding hands. These small moments give the Nutcracker life.
BBT’s Nutcracker and it’s many traditions—Secret Santa, the Julia Morgan Theater, late-night dress rehearsals—have meant so much to me.
BBT was a second home to me for practically my entire childhood and teenage years. I will always hold the relationships and memories I made at BBT close to my heart, and I will always remember the satisfying feeling of going home after a long Saturday sore and tired. Thank you to my teachers and my friends at BBT. This community helped shape the person I am today.
Thank you,
Ruby
